The technology is based on lateral flow, immuno-assays based on the principle of competitive binding. This means that the screens detect analytes of drugs in bodily fluids. Clinical trials show that the device was able to detect drug groups with high levels of sensitivity and specificity.

However to identify specific molecular variations in certain groups including Opiates secondary laboratory analysis is required using MS/MS. This applies to all known near patient drug screens.
